The Enigma mushroom is one of the strangest forms of Psilocybe cubensis you will ever see. It has no caps, no gills and no spores. It grows as a dense, folded mass that looks more like coral or a brain than a mushroom. It also has a big reputation for potency, and in 2026 a lab study finally put numbers to it.
At STEM, we made a limited holiday bar with Enigma in 2025, so this strange mushroom is close to our hearts. Let’s break down what Enigma is, where it came from, how to spot it, what the lab data says about its strength and how to stay safe with any psilocybin product.

What Is the Enigma Mushroom?
DoubleBlind, a magazine that covers psychedelics, describes Enigma as “a ‘blob mutation’ of the P. cubensis family” and says it is not a true strain at all, but a cross of two mating types (DoubleBlind). GreenState adds that “the blob mutation happens seemingly randomly in lots of Psilocybin cubensis strains” (GreenState).
In plain terms, Enigma is a cubensis that never forms the usual stem and cap. It produces the same family of compounds as other cubensis mushrooms, including psilocybin, but in a very different shape.
That is why you will see Enigma described as a “phenotype” or a “mutation” instead of a strain. The genetics are cubensis. The growth pattern is the unusual part.
Where the Enigma Mushroom Came From
The exact history is fuzzy. DoubleBlind says, “The story behind this mysterious mushroom is unknown,” and notes that some growers connect it to Tidal Wave genetics. Some people also call the mutation “Tidal Wave” or “Brainiac”. GreenState is more direct: “Enigma was first isolated from a flush of Tidal Wave mushrooms.”
Like a lot of strain history, the Enigma story passed between hobby growers before anyone wrote it down. In our opinion, the Tidal Wave link is the best-supported version, because two separate publications point to it.
How to Identify an Enigma Mushroom
You will not mistake Enigma for a regular magic mushroom. DoubleBlind describes it as “resembling dense coral or brain-like structures” that grow slowly “in dense clusters, often having a white or bluish hue.” GreenState adds that some look “like scallops, fingers, blobs, or fins.”
Here is what to look for:
- No caps or gills: the tissue forms folds and lobes instead.
- Dense clusters: tight, heavy masses rather than separate mushrooms.
- Pale colour: white to cream, sometimes with blue tones.
Why the Enigma Mushroom Has No Spores
Spores come from the gills under a mushroom’s cap. Enigma has no caps, so it has no spores. GreenState puts it simply: “Without caps, there aren’t any spores to spread new generations of Enigmas.” DoubleBlind says Enigma “can only be propagated through cloning.”
Growers pass it along as living tissue instead. GreenState says cultivators usually trade or gift Enigma “via plate, slant, stasis tube, or liquid culture.”

Enigma Mushroom Potency: What the Lab Data Shows
For years, Enigma was sold as one of the strongest cubensis types around. DoubleBlind notes that “some have claimed that the potency of Enigma mushrooms tends to be higher than other strains of P. cubensis.” Here is what the measured data says.
The 2026 Journal of Fungi Enigma Study
A 2026 study in the Journal of Fungi grew 14 strains of Psilocybe cubensis under identical lab conditions and measured their tryptamines (Sharchaton et al., 2026). Enigma was one of them. It measured 8.11 mg/g of total tryptamines, including 7.91 mg/g of psilocybin. That placed it 7th of the 14 strains.
For comparison, the same study measured 17.59 mg/g of total tryptamines in Penis Envy and 20.65 mg/g in the top strain. Enigma also had the lowest psilocin level of any strain tested, at 0.11 mg/g. The authors noted “a higher psilocin content in ‘Penis Envy’ than in ‘Enigma’.”
Enigma Hyphae Cup and Tryptomics Results
Other test results point the same way. DoubleBlind reports that in the Oakland Hyphae Fall 2022 cup, an entry called Enigma Tony contained 8.4 mg of psilocybin per gram, Enigma B contained 9.3 mg per gram and an “Enigma Revert” contained just 1.8 mg per gram. GreenState reports that testing by the lab Tryptomics showed Enigma “isn’t more potent than the average Psilocybe cubensis strain (about 7 mg per gram).”
What Enigma’s Numbers Mean for You
Let’s be straight with you. The data does not support the idea that Enigma is the strongest cubensis. It suggests an average to above-average mushroom, with big swings between samples. The same 2026 study found that psilocybin varied by about 13% to 23% between individual mushrooms of the same strain. Health Canada says it plainly: “the strength of magic mushrooms can vary greatly” (Health Canada).
Here is why that matters. The name on the label tells you far less than the amount of psilocybin in the piece you take.
Enigma vs Penis Envy and Melmac
People often compare Enigma with the Penis Envy family. Here is how the numbers stack up in the sources we trust:

One lab study is not the final word, and every batch is different. Still, if you picked Enigma because you heard it is the strongest mushroom around, the published numbers say otherwise.
Enigma Mushroom Effects
Because Enigma is Psilocybe cubensis, its effects follow the same pattern as other psilocybin mushrooms. Health Canada says effects appear within 15 to 45 minutes and usually last four to six hours. People may feel heightened emotions and senses and may feel happy and creative. Physical effects can include numbness in the face and higher heart rate and blood pressure.

Why the Enigma Mushroom Grows So Slowly
DoubleBlind reports that growing Enigma “typically takes about four weeks longer than the average P. cubensis strain,” and that growers describe six to eight weeks from start to harvest. That slow growth is part of why Enigma stays rare and expensive.

Dosing Any Psilocybin Mushroom Safely
Whatever the variety, a measured dose is the safest place to start. Researchers at Oregon State University bought 12 “magic mushroom” edibles in Portland, Oregon and found that none of them contained psilocybin, and seven held ingredients that were not on the label (Oregon State University). That is the problem we set out to solve with clearly labelled pieces.
Next steps for a first try with any psilocybin chocolate:
- Start small. With a standard STEM 3 g bar, that means a half piece (100 mg) or a quarter piece (50 mg).
- Wait two hours. Psilocin peaks in the blood about 2 hours after an oral dose (Holze et al., 2023), so do not take more in that window.
- Keep it simple. Health Canada warns that mixing magic mushrooms with cannabis, amphetamines or alcohol raises the risk of serious side effects.
- Write it down. Note the dose, the time and how you felt.

How to Read a Psilocybin Chocolate Label
Because strain names say so little about strength, the label matters more than the marketing. Here is what we suggest checking on any psilocybin chocolate:
- The total amount: how many grams of mushroom are in the whole bar.
- The amount per piece: such as 200 mg in each of 15 pieces.
- The mushroom variety: useful context, but not a dose.
- How to split it: clear guidance on halves and quarters for smaller doses.
If a product cannot tell you how much mushroom is in each piece, we would skip it. That is the standard we hold our own bars to.
Is the Enigma Mushroom Legal in Canada?
No more than any other psilocybin mushroom. Health Canada states that the production, sale and possession of magic mushrooms are illegal in Canada unless Health Canada authorizes them, and that no therapeutic product containing psilocybin is approved. People with heart conditions, or with existing psychiatric conditions or a predisposition to them, may face higher risks, according to Health Canada.
